The Real Journey of Unschooling: Beyond Instagram Moments

Free Unschooling Resources

In the intricate tapestry of our lives, unravelling is not about destruction, but about conscious exploration. It’s a deliberate process of pulling threads, examining systems, and challenging the narratives we’ve been taught to accept without question. Unschooling families like mine understand that unravelling is a continuous journey. It’s about recognising the interconnected systems of education, race, gender, and personal expectations that shape our experiences. Each thread we pull reveals another, creating a complex web of understanding.

Begin with Curiosity

The process begins with curiosity. What societal norms have we internalised? How do systems of education, work, and social expectations intersect? Unravelling means having the courage to question everything – from how we approach learning to how we define success. For many of us, this journey starts small. Maybe it’s questioning traditional schooling, recognising that one-size-fits-all education doesn’t serve individual needs. It might be challenging internalised beliefs about productivity, beauty, or personal worth. Each small act of questioning is a step towards personal growth.

3 Ways to Support each other’s Unravelling Journeys

Importantly, unravelling is not a linear process. It’s messy, uncomfortable, and sometimes lonely. We may feel isolated as we challenge long-held beliefs, but we’re not alone. Communities of like-minded individuals provide support, sharing their own journeys of discovery.

1/ Creating spaces and communities that openly support and welcome curiosity, questioning and discovery. These friendship groups and spaces actively foster the exploration of ideas. Spaces where these ideas can be discussed and thoughtfully considered and participants listen actively without trying to fix or redirect others. They are able to hold space for people’s experiences, thoughts and feelings.

2/ Recognising that personal growth is unique and non-linear. That any one experience will be personal and whilst we may share common elements each individual will explore different aspects in their own time and way. This requires us to be patient and compassionate with each other’s process and offering support, when needed, without imposing your own expectations. It requires all of us to remaining curious and open to different perspectives.

3/ Accepting the emotional spectrum that accompanies the process of questioning everything! Acknowledging that unravelling can be challenging and lonely but that there is also joy in going deeper, getting to know ourselves and learning to trust ourselves more and more.

The key is to provide a soft, supportive environment where people feel safe to explore, question, and grow at their own pace.

Beauty in Transformation

The beauty of unravelling lies in its potential for transformation. It’s about creating space for authenticity – for ourselves and our children. We learn to trust our intuition, respect individual experiences, and create environments that nurture genuine self-expression. This journey requires compassion – for ourselves and others. We’re not seeking perfection, but understanding. Each unravelled thread is a chance to rebuild something more authentic and meaningful. Unravelling is an act of radical self-love. It’s choosing curiosity over conformity, connection over competition, and personal truth over external validation. Are you ready to start pulling threads?

In this deeply personal and insightful conversation, Heidi Steel and Makeba Garraway explore the concept of “unravelling” – a metaphorical journey of questioning, discovering, and transforming personal beliefs and societal systems.

Makeba (she/her) is a mother to two always-unschooled children aged 12 and 9. Originally from the UK, her neurodivergent family moved to California in 2019 and now live on Ohlone land in the Bay Area. Her career journey so far has led from medicine to student mental health, and is now leading towards death doula work. Makeba enjoys singing in two community choirs, being creative, and spending time with her 2 dogs.
